New Links

June 10th, 2009

Just on my way to meet FareShare in Leeds, to discuss how we may work together to send any surplus stock we have to this forward thinking and extremely valuable Community Interest Company … more later … but just wanted to point out a few new links added today…. Paganum Produce is a fabulous organisation, based in Malhamdale, run by Chris Wildman. Chris has a background in both farming and butchery, the two combine perfectly to ensure he can both source and produce meat of the finest quality.

Chris works with the most passionate and ethical farmers in the Dales providing them with a much needed online platform and delivery service. Lamb from his  family farm, Limestone Country beef from a conservation grazing project, rare breed pork and a wide range of accompaniments. Easy to order and delivered in refrigerated transport throughout the UK. Chris also supplies Chefs and is happy to arrange farm visits to enable you to talk with confidence about the origin of your menu.

Along with the link to Paganum, I have added Chris’s blog, he updates it far more regularly that I do mine! and it provides a wealth of information about who is doing what with food in the Dales.

Apple A Day are attending Change4Life Live at Doncaster Racecourse on Wednesday 24th June.

The Change 4 Life movement that was rolled out nationally at the start of January 2009 to date, has proven to be one of the fastest growing government campaigns. It already has very high recognition levels amongst the general public with 63% of mothers already aware of the campaign.

The Regional Public Health Group for Yorkshire and Humber are keen to provide opportunities for as many people as possible who are working on obesity, food and physical activity in the Yorkshire and Humber region to network, and share experience and good practice.

They are therefore planning a major event, on June 24th, for everyone involved in; working in obesity, food and physical activity, and who are promoting the Change 4 Life principles.

To attend, with or without a stand, click on the link to Glasgows, Event Management Company.

Apple A Day ‘On The Road’

June 7th, 2009

Horrified that it’s almost 3 weeks since I updated this,  completely defies the object of a Blog… have been really busy though, the garden has taken up most of my previous weekends and a tonne of admin in the office too…. enough of the excuses!

Yesterday I attended the superb Yorkshire International Business Convention, where I gave away literally thousands of apples, oranges, bananas, grapes…. Less figs, which seemed to have a few people quite puzzled.

The Speakers were inspirational, as was the atmosphere at the event, a real ‘feelgood’ experience and a wonderful opportunity to promote healthy eating to so many people who really know they should but who need a little help with the how.

If you’re reading this because we met on Friday, let me remind you of the wording on our poster, “Sickness Absence costs up to £500.00 per employee, per year” . “In total, sickness absence costs the Government more than the entire budget of the National Health Service”.

Scary stuff, and the Government thinks so too, in their response to Dame Carol Blacks 2008 Report, ‘Working for a Healthier Tomorrow’  The Government have committed resources to improving the health of the working population, we spend 60% of our waking life ‘at work’ so this is the ideal place to target those most at risk.

As an employer you will be well aware of your responsibilities relating to safety in the workplace, you wouldn’t dream of allowing someone to drive a fork lift without the relevant training and safety gear, now think about how you can help your employees to enjoy a more healthy lifestyle, consider a lunch time walking group, encourage walking to work, or maybe incentivise employees that have to travel by car, to park further away.

We can help with diet, there are endless possibilities for intoroducing fresh fruit in to the workplace, a bowl of apples on reception,  a platter of fresh fruit to replace the boardroom biscuits;  for the shopfloor … a cost effective, bulk delivery of boxed fruit, alternate apples one week, bananas the next, no fancy displays needed and employees have access to at least two of their ‘5 A Day’.

Statistics show those least likely to eat five portions of fresh fruit and vegetables are men aged 17 to 45, they typically achive a maximum of 2 portions, by giving easy access to fruit in the workplace you will be doubling their intake and this could have a dramatic effect on their health.

So, if sickness absence really is costing you up to £500.00 per employee, per year, consider introducing fresh fruit, which will typically cost less than £75.00 per employee, per year … thst’s before you take in to account the other benefits …. increased productivity, motivated team, forward thinking company…. call us on 0800 310 2888 to dicuss.

Make Every Friday 'Fruity'

Make Every Friday 'Fruity'

Step by Step Changes

May 17th, 2009

Last week I attended an excellent workshop on Nutrition. The presenter was Alison Clark,  an experienced State Registered Dietitian, the group of around 15 Women (Men were invited!) were aged from early 20’s to late 40’s.  Alison started by asking the group to record what they had eaten the previous day, this was not to be shared with the group but to be referred to, on an individual basis, as Alison took the group through a typical day and explained the many benefits of eating ‘well’.

I was quite horrified at how little I really did understand about just HOW important it is to eat at least five portions of fruit and veg a day, with, of course, the right combination of foods from other groups and also concerned at how few of those at the event were eating more than 1 or 2 of the 5 A Day.

So, this is where I get ‘chatty’ and honest and stop trying to sound like an article in a medical journal…. and, if you already know more than 25% of what you really should about eating well, then now may be a good time to stop reading. I’ll explain. When I was researching nutrition for the Apple A Day Website I found numerous documents ranging from highly technical scientific papers, through to ‘Colin the Carrot’ …. but felt there was something lacking in the middle …

Information aimed at those of us who care passionately about what we eat, who want to do the best for our own bodies and for the Health of those we care about, those of us who are interested in the science behind the statements, but with a little less of the chemistry.

I will bring together all of the good bits and leave out the insanely teccy stuff .. with the intention of not just preaching the 5 A Day rule but in portraying in the simplest way, WHY it’s important … just 90 minutes with Alison changed so much of my thinking and I hope I can help you to change too.

Eating Well For Cancer Prevention

May 16th, 2009

It is a sad statistic that one in three of us will be affected in some way, by Cancer during our lives. As with all major diseases prevention is better than cure and World Cancer Research (WCRF) have produced both the research and the back up literature to support their recommendations for “Stopping Cancer before it starts”

They start by saying that scientists estimate that a third of cancers could be prevented by making changes to the food we eat and the amount of exercise we take and by maintaining a healthy weight.

In November 2007 WCRF published a report Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity and the prevention of Cancer; A Global perspective. In producing the report WCRF identified 500,000 studies, these were screened down to 22,000 and eventually 7,000 were found to be relevant. A Panel of 21 world renowned experts then compared and evaluated these studies and drew from them 10, evidence based recommendations for preventing cancer.

WCRF UK has grouped these in three realistic guidelines.

1. Choose mostly plant foods, limit red meat and avoid processed meat
2. Be physically active every day, in any way, for 30 minutes of more
3. Aim to be a healthy weight throughout life

As I am involved in the Fresh Produce Industry, I intend to focus on that element of the guidelines and do hope you will find  my postings can help you to make changes, however small, to your daily routine.

A ‘Fab Fruity Fortnight’

May 16th, 2009

In the past two weeks I have met more interesting people than I think I have met for years, and become even more convinced, if that is possible, that it is absolutely imperative to hit that target of eating 5 portions of fruit and vegetables every day.

There are too many examples of evidence to begin to list them all now so I will break them down in to regular portions and post bite by delicious bite….. starting with a scary fact …

Did you know that really, the optimum number of portions, of fruit and veg, that we should eat in a day is actually 9, but when putting together the 5 A Day campaign, those in the know felt 9 was just too much for the average 1 A Day consumer to deal with… hence ‘5 A Day’

What a Week!

May 14th, 2009

Meeting myself coming back .. what on earth does that mean? but it describes how I am today, trying to set up new blog, navigate around small child, with cold, sitting on my desk, hold on phone for 90 minutes to get tickets to see Burnley at Wembley, update my weekly prices for our school’s contracts, write press releases for new launch, make appointments for next week…… dizzy doesn’t begin to describe it!
